SpeedEvents Internationals
As I rolled up to the gates of Tierp Arena, I had a sudden moment of doubt – did I get the date wrong? No one driving in this direction, no cars in front of the gates and an almost empty parking lot. Was the SpeedEvents Internationals really happening today – I asked myself?
Thankfully, the roar of engines tearing through the air, audible long before I even got close to the arena, cleared up any confusion. Yes, it’s happening here and now.
I headed to the event with no big expectations, just taking it easy. I didn’t bother with media accreditation this time. Sure, not having close access to the strip was a bit of a downside – but on the other hand, I could just sit back and watch it all unfold from the stands, no rush, no pressure.
Too often, I end up running around with a camera, trying to capture every single moment of an event – and in doing so, I miss out on a lot of the actual experience. This time was different. I only brought three rolls of film and a simple, entry-level Nikon F75.
The vibe of the event actually matched my laid-back mood perfectly.
Drag racing usually brings to mind high-octane action, roaring engines, and pure adrenaline. But the atmosphere at Tierp Arena felt almost surreal. On one hand, you had these mechanical beasts screaming down the strip, on the other, a paddock that felt half-asleep, and grandstands that weren’t much livelier.
I’ve always liked the lively paddock at the Drag Festival in Mantorp Park. The mix of more or less amateur teams gives the whole place so much personality. I enjoy watching the mechanics at work, half-dismantled machines, tools scattered around: it all feels raw and real. Unfortunately, the situation at the paddock of Tierp Arena was much different. Pit spaces of the teams were in most cases arranged in such a way, that there was no way to enjoy the view.
This time, the Top Fuel category featured just two drivers, both running under RF Motorsport. I had the chance to follow Susanne Callin as she got ready for her run.
So, while I don’t have much to say about results or rankings, I still really wanted to share some of the photos I took. The sleepy, almost surreal atmosphere of the event, combined with my own relaxed approach, led to some shots that I think are worth showing. Hopefully, you’ll agree.
In many ways, dragsters are a world apart from the classic cars I’m most passionate about. But I have to say – this sport is incredibly photogenic.
And there’s always something uplifting about watching people who are truly living their passion and chasing their dreams.
